The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) supports projects on monitoring marine litter in the South West Indian Ocean region in six countries : Seychelles, Mozambique, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar and South Africa.

Over a period of 3 years (2019-2021), monitoring of marine litter accumulated on the coasts will be carried out using common methodologies. In Madagascar, the project is jointly led by Cétamada (Malagasy Association for the Conservation of Marine Mammals and Marine Habitats in the Indian Ocean) and CEDTM (Center for the Study of Marine Turtles in Reunion Island). The objective of this major project is to be able to provide for the first time a characterization and identification of marine litter which will make it possible to act at all stages of the life cycle of objects: production, transport, consumption and waste management. For data collection, four sites were selected : Nosy Be, Tuléar, Fort-Dauphin and Sainte Marie.
