Turkish company Yapi Merkezi was awarded the construction of the US$1.9 billion railway section between Makutupora in Dodoma district and Tabora on December 28.

This 368 km segment is part of the project, initiated in 2017, to develop, in several lots, a 1,219 km railroad line of the Standard Gauge Railway(SGR) linking Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, a port city on Lake Victoria. This is the third contract awarded to Yapi Merkezi, which is also in charge of the execution of lots 1 (in partnership with Mota Engil-Africa) and 2, for the construction of the Dar es Salaam – Morogoro (202 km) and Morogoro – Makutupora (328 km) sections, which have been partially completed to date.
With the development of the SGR – which is part of a strategy to modernize and extend the railway network – Tanzania aims to strengthen its trade relations with the region’s landlocked countries (Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi) and to become a major player in their supply chains.
